Academic Assignments on Behaviour Therapy

According to Nelson-Jones (2001), Pavlov was researching the functioning of the brains of dogs, originally in relation to digestion, and discovered the "conditioned response" quite by accident.[1]  Kagan and Segal (1992), on the other hand, state that Pavlov was pursuing the question "Can reflexes be modified by learning?"[2]   This became known as "classical conditioning", and consists of the observed fact that incidental features of the situation in which the laboratory dogs were fed, tended to become associated with, or linked to, the inherited reflex of salivating in the presence of food.[3]  Pavlov, and those who followed him,  conducted thousands of experiments to check his insight that any (originally neutral) stimulus which becomes paired with a significant stimulus, related to the inborn salivation reflex of a dog, would in its own right become a new stimulus which would produce the innate reflex.

Existential Therapy and Logotherapy

Existential therapy, it seems, concentrates upon the anxiety (and guilt) that individuals feel about death, freedom, isolation and meaninglessness. (Nelson-Jones, 2001).[5]  The idea that death, and meaninglessness, is at the root of existential anxiety, comes from Heidegger, (as discussed in Magill, 1982).  (But Sartre sees existential anxiety as having nothing to do with death, but rather with self awareness in the gaze of the other, and the impossibility of a reunion between being-in-itself (which is comparable to Freud's id) and being-for-itself (which is roughly analogous to Freud's ego).[6])  Furthermore, existential anxiety seems to be defined in an unusual way, relative to "regular anxiety" about identifiable triggers.

A Brief Introduction to the theory of the Good and Bad Wolf states...

The Native American Cherokee people had the concept of a war going on inside each human being.  That war is between two wolves: the good wolf and the bad wolf.[2]  And the wolf that wins the war is the one that is fed the most!  References to the Good and Bad Wolf, or the good and bad sides of human nature, can be found in various places in the papers and books published by the Institute for CENT.

CENT Counselling: How to apply it in practice

This is a popular introduction to the theory and practice of Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy (CENT), which is an integrative new philosophy of life, and a psychological system of counselling and psychotherapy.

CENT Paper No.3: An Introduction to the Windows Model

We do not see with our eyes so much as with our brains.  Eyes are part of the machinery of perception, but the decisions about ‘what it is' that we see are not made by our eyes.  Those decisions are made by our ‘stored experiences' driving our ‘judgements'.  We do not see ‘external events' so much with our eyes then as we see them through ‘frames of reference and interpretation' which were created in the past, and which we now implement as habit-based stimulus-response pairings.  Or we could call these responses ‘pattern matching' processes.  "I've seen this stimulus (or ‘external event') before.  This (particular interpretation) is the sense I made of it last time.  So that is how I will relate to it this time".

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) - Some reflections

I discovered the weaknesses of REBT quite by accident; and I began to deviate from the official model as a result.  In fact, my deviations from Dr Ellis’s philosophy had begun in 2001, when I began to review a critique of REBT, by Frank Bond and Windy Dryden, from 1996.  (See my CENT Paper No.1(a), [Byrne 2009c])[ii].  Those authors had raised concerns about the core of REBT theory being essentially untestable.  I waded in to defend REBT; went back to basics to clarify the core model – the ABC model – and in the process I raised more questions than I answered.

The Institute for CENT, Halifax and Hebden, West Yorkshire

The Institute for Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy (I-CENT) was established in March 2007, by Jim Byrne and Renata Taylor-Byrne.
The core mission of the institute is to review the most prominent and most promising models of mind, created by the major philosophers and psychologists, from the time of the Buddha and Plato to modern times.

These include the models of Plato, Aristotle, Freud and the post-Freudians, Ellis and the cognitive-behaviourists, Attachment theory, Transactional Analysis, Zen Buddhism, Moral philosophy, and many other useful ideas and theories.
The aim of this exercise is to ensure that Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy has the most useful and well-informed model of the human mind to guide our counselling and therapy activities.
